Undergraduate Academic Participation and Success

A provisional tool-kit for self-assessment and mentoring

Committee on Diversity and Community 2006-07 and 2007-08

The course catalog is technically the same for every student at Williams. But not all of our students enjoy the same level of participation and success in each of our departments and programs. Evidence at Williams suggests that students from some demographic groups (female, male, African American, Latina/o, Asian American, White, first-generation college) are underrepresented in certain academic disciplines and fields on campus. These patterns may reflect national trends or may be specific to Williams.

STAND WITH US UPDATE 3/10/08

11 03 2008

Learn how the movement has been progressing and how you can get involved

Subgroups:

Subcommunities – contact Kelsey Jones if you would like to participate

1. We are planning on improving JA training on issues of discrimination and respect by bringing in outside facilitators in both the fall and spring. We also hope to work with admissions to get a comparative of the incoming class and the JA class.

2. We will work toward creating more interconnectedness and unity between the various Minco groups and thinking of ways in which these groups can have a greater presence on campus.

3. We are developing ideas about how athletic teams can promote an enhanced sense of openness to those not on teams, perhaps by having more activities like Winter Carnival where the larger campus community can interact with the teams.

4. We are also working on improving the ability for religious groups to interact with the campus community.

Public Relations/Demonstrations – contact Zoe Fonseca for more info/to help out

We will be sending out exciting updates like the one you’re reading right now.

2/12 Minutes: Meeting

15 02 2008

- communication with campus - acknowledge concerns, avoid misinformation, polarization, but emphasize that this is not an overreaction

- post pact in posters around campus

- ask professors if they would take a portion of the class to discuss what happened

- read pact - 120 students gathered in a college council meeting on Wednesday, more than that one event, years of documented and undocumented events, need to know that this is a problem/concern

Ideas from the Special Meeting of Faculty (2/13)

15 02 2008

This list was included in the email re: Special Meeting of the Faculty. Because that post was fairly long, the list is being posted as a separate entry to ensure that it is not overlooked.

Ideas from the Special Meeting of Faculty
February 13, 2008

Faculty must acknowledge that racist, homophobic, sexist, anti-
religious, and other intolerant behaviors occur regularly at
Williams, not just in sporadic episodes that receive administrative
attention.

Email: Special Meeting of the Faculty (2/14)

15 02 2008

**Forwarded to a member of Stand With US 2/14/2008**

Dear Colleague,

On behalf of the 21-member faculty/staff/student Committee on Diversity
and Community, I want to reach all faculty and staff with
information about yesterday’s special meeting of the faculty called by the
President.

Below is a summary of some of the ideas raised at that meeting. While the
purpose of the meeting was not to initiate actions, it was clear that
faculty members are hungry for action, education, and collaborative work
with students and staff.

Letter to the Faculty

12 02 2008

Dear Faculty of the College,

Last weekend’s incident has sparked anger and uproar from many in our community who, in recent meetings, expressed that much of the campus – students, faculty, staff, and administration – remains ignorant or indifferent to the recent events, as well as the history and culture of intolerance at Williams. Students have raised the issue that this culture of intolerance pervades several areas of campus life, including the classroom.
